The final project for the course, Introduction to Product Design, I had to create a product that could be marked up 2-3 times the cost of production as the selling price ($7 being the maximum). I was paired up with a classmate, Ingrid, who I worked well with and was very comfortable with, to complete this project.
Our goal was to create a product that could be useful for busy students but also a fun element to it. We brainstormed and sketched many possible ideas and finally settled for something that would cater to our target audience. Thus, Toss Up was born.
The Toss Up is an 8-sided chalkboard dice that helps with decision making. It can also be used for brainstorming, task-managing or as a game accessory.
We had about 3 weeks to plan our manufacturing process, make as many final products as we can and sell them to our audience. Through social media, we were able to advertise Toss Up. The whole manufacturing process was tiring but very fun and enjoyable. We stayed in the studio almost everyday after classes until almost midnight to make our product.
We made about 50 finished pieces and sold all of it. Each Toss Up was sold for $3 and the entire kit (one Toss Up, an origami stand, chalk and a chamois (cloth)) for $5.

Laser cutting masonite. Notice the cute little etched logo.

Sanding each edge to create a miter joint.

Assembled each pyramid half but gluing the edges with E6000 and reinforcing the inside with wood glue.

Sanded down the sharp edges with a belt sander.

All lined up ready for finishing.

After a few coats of chalkboard spray paint.

Fortunately, our hard work did not go to waste. We earned the highest profit out of all the teams!
